Does anyone know how many of these rigs were ever produced? The serial
number of my rig is #822 and I think that perhaps only 1,000 were ever
produced. Many thanks.

Javier, I timed boot up time to be about 12 to 13 seconds from turn on of
the Orion. So a full minute is excessive.

On cw, which I operate on a lot these days, I use mostly the BW encoder and
find that under most conditons using the BW encoder is sufficient. I seldom
if ever use the hi cut or low cut for cw operation, but on occasion have
used the PBT if a station seems to be too close to my frequency. I have used
hi cut and low cut on PSK, and find it helps for that mode. I would suggest
that you focus on the BW adjustment since you can go down to 100hz and then
if you have QRM, try the PBT next. Leave the hi cut and lo cut alone for
the time being.

The background noise you are having I don't understand as my noise level is
very low, except for an intermittent line noise problem. It might be good
to check for the usual line noise problems or other appliances in the house
which could be causing problems (ie door bell transformers, computers,
monitors, touch lamps etc.)

On ssb, set your filters in auto in the menu and just leave them there for
the time being. IF you have version 1.372 these filters will automatically
kick in at the right BW setting. Set your BW at 2800 to 3000 hz and try that
range for awhile. IF you have QRM reduce the BW to about 2400hz to 1800hz.
I have gone as low as 1400hz and with a little PBT thrown in had a good copy
on my signal. Be sure that in the menu you have either usb or lsb set up to
receive ssb signals.

Most of the problems a new owner has are operator errors, so just play with
the rig for awhile and I am sure you will figure it all out. Toby W4CAK

Hi,

I will try to pinpoint the situation and also will post again on the list,
your ideas will be apreciatted (Maybe a book to be read)

1.- It takes almost a minute to load the software at radio startup, is
this normal???

2.- The Orion on the other hand has a lot of background noise on most any
band and I cannot seem to get rid of the noise (I saw it posted today)

3.- I spend my time mostly in 80 & 160 mts and in CW I found those
parameters reasonable for me BW: 1720 PBT:150 but once a low signal
station
appears (most of the times) I start to move the PBT/BW & CUT randomly
without understanding what I am doing just relaying on my ears.

I would like to have a criteria to use those powerful weapons :)

Of course instead all this situation I had been able to copy stations that
with my SuperCharged Mark V were at noise level :)

4.- In SSB the situation is worst and it's very difficult for me to hear
clear audio because I got stuck with the filters use and I am most of the
time unable to have a reliable audio.

5.- In terms of graphics I see a vertical line while I move the filter fro
on side to another, I had read that to align the filters I had to press
for 2 seconds either the CUT or PBT and this happens, but I have not idea
were
I am at that time, so I spend some time from station to station moving the
cut/pbt & bw randomly until a decent signal is picked up. Maybe the rig
it's to much for me :(

6.- At ANT 1 port I have a low band ant & ANT 2 yagi, while using ANT1 the
watmmeter installed between ANT2 port and coax switch moves a litlle ?????

STILL I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE RIG THE PROBLEM IS THE HANDLER Hi-Hi!!!!

I've just received a 1.8kc filter for my Corsair II (I think it is...it's
marked 48075 8341(the latter sounds like a date code).

I do not have the install sheet, but is it as simple as inserting it in
the 1.8 labeled sockets in the IF board? There's a jumper adjacent,
do I need to do anything to it?

Finally, I've got a 500hz Corsair filter that I'd like to trade for a 250.
Any takers?

Thanks for any advice

I'm looking for a TenTec Scout for an upcoming trip. I need, as a minimum, the 40m and 30m modules - others would be nice but not mandatory.
Let me know what you have and what you need to get. Offline, please - to n1sb@comcast.net. Thanks,

Yes there is a jumper near the center of the 1.8kHz filter position that needs to removed or cut. Then it is just a matter of plugging it in. The filter is symmetrical so it can be installed either way.

My Orion (v 1.372 firmware) takes about 12 seconds to come to life. It
_seems_ like a minute! In the future, maybe TT can play some music or
show some exotic DX photos while the radio boots up.

[Javier - I don't know if the following applies to you! I don't know
your background in radio.]

More seriously, there is a need for a "tutorial" that will help a new
ham (at a basic technical level) to get the most out of a high
performance rig. The TenTec Orion manual (now being revised) will
probably never do that job. It is more a reference manual.

[Many people will say that Orion is "too much radio" for beginners.
But is that really true, or do we need better user training material?]

Does anyone know of an existing book that explains SSB and CW tuning,
PBT, AGC, modulation, specifications, etc.? I.e., how to intelligently
operate your new "appliance"? Info is scattered through the Internet,
ARRL pubs, and vendors' manuals, but not in one place that I've found.
