Yes, there is a big downside!

Electrolytic capacitors in the better qualities have a design lifetime of 10
years of operation.  It is shortened by continuous heating and operation at
sustained temperature above ambient air.

Also, there is the vulnerability of the supply to any power line surges and
transients, especially from nearby lightning hits.  Complete protection of
the radio is only possible if the power supply is completely disconnected
from power lines, just as completely disconnecting the antenna leads
protects that end of the radio.

You would not leave your car idling 24/7, why do that to your rig?
