The FT-1000mp has a built in RS-232 interface. The level converter is
internal, so there is no need for the external IF-232 box. I believe this
fact holds for the rest of the "mp"-series rigs.

True, and they are very fond of their CT-17 CI-V converter if price is an
indicator.

The Elecraft K2 equipped with the optional internal KIO2 is also an RS-232
type interface except that the plug wiring is non-standard.

I'm fortunate that my WinBook Z1 laptop computer has a serial port. That's
something to be said in favor of "vintage" hardware.
