In such cases with the Orion, I try a few tricks for starters:

First, I can narrow BW down to 100hz and cw signals still "sound" good.
Every other rig I've used sounded somewhat unpleasant when cw was narrowed
down to even 250hz.  The Orion just doesn't "ring" and "howl" to my ears
like the other radios. (this also goes for ssb - I often use 1450hz +330PBT
selectivity and it sounds fine - try that with any other rig)

Second, I lower the rf gain till the dx is just popping out of silence.
This sometimes allows me to tune my ears to the dx beneath the pileup coming
back to someone.
