Stuart,

The Collins Collectors Association has made the book, "Fundamentals of
Single Sideband" available at:

http://www.collinsradio.org/html/fundssb.html

It goes into great detail about many factors concerning the use of SSB,
from the equipment (Collins) to the antennas.

Some of the high fi SSB audio crowd forget the whole idea of SSB was to
RESTRICT bandwidth of the audio to provide the "punch" for more
effective
communications during poor propagation, use of low power, mobile
operations,
etc.

General LeMay of the Air Force (also a ham of the 50's), proved SSB was
the
superior voice mode for that in tactical SAC communications for the
bomber
fleets of the Cold War. He did a Round the World trip to show an Air
Force
plane using SSB could maintain global communications on HF.
