The Centurion uses a pair of 3-500Z's or ZG's. and one of my original pair
got a grid-cathode short after about 2 yrs of use.

If this is the amp that uses three 811A tubes it is pretty common for that 
type of tube to get a grid/cathode short.

Since your problem goes away after you let the amp cool down and then comes 
back when it warms up I would suspect a tube problem.  The good news is that

the 811A tubes are still pretty cheap!
