While low cost is always an option, if I am going to get into VHF/
UHF, I would prefer high performance with moderate cost. Is the
Elecraft transverters high performance? I have always assumed that
SSB was the best but they are much more expensive than the Elecraft
ones.

The Elecraft xvtrs are very nice - I have the 2M model working with my
Orion 565. But many folks would say $369 for the kit is not "low
cost". Personally, I find the packaging and performance is worth the
price, let alone the entertainment value of putting the thing
together...

With Ten Tec discontinuing most of the transverter kits, are there
any
alternative, low cost units, kits or assembled currently available?
SSB Electronics transverters are pretty expensive, Down East
Microwave
is closed down while they relocate, and Microwave Modules is out
of the
transverter business.
in a word, no.
