Hey Paul - I've had the static buildup problem fool me into thinking I 
needed a new one.  Try a little wet cleanup on it, see if the movement 
runs up and down with your hand.  If its not static, it also may be 
S-meter zero adjustment went out of whack (check the manual, I suspect 
there must be one in there somewhere!)

Hope all the little creatures are well out there.  Spring is coming.
