You can select BC freqs on either VFO, IF the VFO is not assigned to the
transmitter.  This is true on the ver of firmware I have (1.372, I think)
but may be different on other versions.

So--to answer the original question, assign VFO A (or B) to the SUB rx,
making sure that the chosen VFO is NOT assigned to transmit.  Then depress
VFO A enter, (freq display clears) enter "4455.9" (or whatever), and 
depress VFO A enter again.  You should be tuned to listen on 4455.9Khz.

Only the sub receiver will tune very far beyond the ham bands.  After the
overlap (allowed for MARS Freqs) the software blocks your "adventure".
