I have a Hercules II and a 9420 power supply. I have never operated it
using any other power supply.
I also have a SGC SG-500 amplifier, which has very similar current
requirements. I have powered the SG-500 with various combinations of
small power supplies and batteries. Some times the batteries were there
not just to provide peak current greater than what the power supplies
could provide, but also because I was operating in a location with
intermittent AC mains power. My most recent method has been to use an
Astron RS-70 and a pair of Trojan T-105 deep cycle 6 volt batteries. I
have not used the SG-500 much since I got the Hercules II. I'm sort of
keeping it for some future high power mobile setup.
I think if I did not have the Ten-Tec 9420 to power my Hercules II, and
I intended to use it primarily from AC mains power, I would not go the
undersized power supply compensated by a big battery route. And I don't
think I'd try for one big power supply to do it all. My preference would
be to find four identical linear mode voltage regulated (and current
limited) 20 to 25 amp power supplies, and feed the four sections of the
Hercules II separately, the same way Ten-Tec does with the 9420. Of
course finding a 9420 would be my first preference. Lacking that, I
think it is a good idea to do it as close to the way Ten-Tec intended as
possible.
I'm sure many other ways of doing it can also work.
