When a program finishes, the comport is automatically released by the operating system whether the program released it or not. However, all the last settings are still in the comport.

When a new program starts, if it is well written it will send all serial parameters to the comport (or USB port) and not depend on any parameter being left over from a previous session. If this is done, reliable operation will always result.

Some haves asked, what radios?

588 Omni VII version 1.035a {running beta test for Tentec}
599 Eagle version 1.825
539 Argonaut VI version 144 {running beta test for Tentec}

These do work well via either the RS-232 port or the USB port. The old
desktop computer has a RS-232 port running under Windows XP (sp3).
Applications are HRD / DM780 and FLDIGI and MixW3, current versions.

It does seem that some of the applications may not "release" certain
parameters when they close thus preventing communications when initiated
for a different radio. In all cases, either a reload of the application
or running the Demo-O-Matic in the case of HRD, I've found does correct
the problem. I've generally found that closing the application before
turning the radio off seems to prevent certain issues at a later date.

I've also tried the above using a laptop running Windows Vista with the
same results.

I run both the Omni VII and the Eagle using HRD / DM780. For the Omni
VII I am using a true RS-232 communication port and not a USB to
Serial converter. The Eagle is connected via the USB port.

I have noticed from time to time the Omni VII will not connect.
Specifically the list will have a red X by the Frequency =0 . If you
recall there is an Orion Demo configuration in HRD. When I find the
Omni VII will not connect to the HRD program I just click on the
Demo-O-Matic that selects the Orion and let it run Then Click on
Connect and select the Omni VII. For me, it has worked every time.
I've not been able to determine any particular sequence of events
prior which changes or could cause a problem.

I have three different radios in my PRESET list, along with the
Demo-O-Matic for the Orion in the HRD application. When one of them
won't connect, running the Demo-O-Matic clears what ever and then
selecting the desired radio has always worked.

Quote: I was going over this with another ham buddy who also has an O
II,
and he told me that he had developed the same problem. He suggest that I
let HRD time out and try to connect using the Jupiter definition. That
didn't work, but defining the port as an Eagle did. However, this whole
thing was a bit tenuous.

I have a Orion I. I could not get it to talk to my computer running
HRD ver5. I thought the com port was bad on the radio and had it
tested . Worked fine when using Logger 32!

I then test my com1 port on my computer. It word fine with my TS-2000
and HRD.
I also told the HRD to try the Eagle and it started working. I
deleted the Eagle and used the Orion and I was able to get HRD
working correctly. Now it works every time as it should.
I am not sure why the Eagle ver. for HRD started it working
correctly. It is almost like a software switch was changed or turned
on in the radio.
