Then there are those in every pile-up for a rare one who a trying to work a new one they can't hear. Maybe they have a friend who CAN hear them and the rare DX and who is doing the telephone relay; "Call him again Ollie, I think he came back to you."

I always questioned how meaningful a statement this was in regards to
antennas.  How well an antenna functions is always reflected in how well
signals will be received and transmitted.  A crappy antenna means you won't
hear much but you'll still be able to work what you hear (not much).  A
good antenna means you'll hear plenty and be able work what you hear
(plenty).  This all assumes you're running same power and have same receive
noise level as the guy you're listening to.
