Ok, am confused about CM500. I got one about 3 years ago and there was
no 'battery box'. I simply plugged it into the back of my K3 and it
works great. Has there been a change to what is shipped now?

The K3 is designed to accept that type of
microphone and provides the required bias
voltage on the jack, and the AF-GAIN an d
audio circuit for that jack on the K3
expects and is suited or adjusted for that
                type of microphone capsule.

With the basic headset, w/o battery box, does Heil make an adaptor for
the O II? If not, does YC's suggestion of 5.6 k ohm resistor between
-10v and mic pin still valid?

If I understand the question correctly... it would
not be required for the K3, but might be for the
TenTec rigs under heretofore under discussion in
                this thread.

I have gotten the CM500 to work with the O II by plugging it into the
front panel of a microHam mK II but have to really turn down the gain.

I am not as sure about this as I am about the K3,
but I think the Microham device is also set to
expect that sort of mic, but its internal gain
settings may be hotter than the K3, and this would
explain why it works OK, but runs hotter.

Just My take...
