E.L.  illuminators tend to be not very bright but you are correct, they do seem 
to last a very long time.

They are also really cheap to manufacture. 

They do not need diffusers to smooth out the illumination because, typically, 
the devices fill the entire field behind the plane of the display which they 
are illuminating.

The color options are limited though…
