Pete,

After thinking about your post I'd suggest re-thinking your situation. You are 
dealing with two different issues: the first is the encoder issue; the second 
is in my book much more serious -- that of the lightning hit. The fact that 
you say you also lost a computer at the same time raises red flags: note the 
number of posts over the years on this and other forums in which a rig sent 
in for service after a lightning hit was declared unrepairable. This is due 
to the "ripple effect" of failures after lightning strikes or surges which 
occur because the miniaturized devices currently used are stressed and 
weakened, leading to additional failures later on after normal power and/or 
thermal stresses finish them off.

I'd suggest looking at your homeowner's policy to see if it covers lightning 
strikes and if it does, send the rig to TT for evaluation.
