Tom,

What are you using for a power supply? The Ten Tec 255 (companion supply for
OMNI-X's) and 280 supplies provide overvoltage protection. The 251 and 252
supplies do not provide ovp. TenTec did offer an outboard OVP (TT 1150) that's
installed between the supply and OMNI. It's fitted with the 4-pin AMP
mate-n-lok connectors...making it a plug-n-play installation for TT 251 and 252
supplies. If your supply doesn't provide OVP, Bel Power Systems (Power One)
makes a compact OVP board for installation in the supply. Their p/n is OVP-12G,
and they're available from Allied Electronics (for example) for less than $20.
The OVP-12G's are easily installed, and have adjustable over-voltage threshold

My guess is that a (shunt) 15v 10W zener isn't going to last long with 20A
available... best (but unlikely) case, long enough to trip the (latching?)
over-current protection before vaporizing zener "open".

Another question would be - anyone ever try to replace that connector
with something more rugged?

I also ordered a new-old-stock 1N2979A (big 15V zener) off of Ebay to
replace the big diode where the power comes into the chassis.
Not sure why TenTec didn't do that orginally. The manual says something
about it being there to blow the fuse for reverse polarity - why not
make it a zener and
get an over voltage crowbar too?
