>From my experience operating in the 160m contests from a salt lake bed with a balloon-supported vertical, I can verify that a moist, pure salt ground works outstandingly well. However, the salty ground there extends for several miles and the few hundred pounds of salt you have will probably be spread quite thin, only in the near field.
