Topband: Verticals

Just a question that I have wondered about for years.  Why don't medium wave 
broadcsters use inverted vees or dipoles instead of vertcals?   Our experience 
on the ham bands have been that low dipoles are better for close in operation 
than vertically polarized low angle radiators.  Could it be frequency dependant?
