after reading the various posts about masts, alu v. steel, i was wondering
what effect weight has. if the mast is supported with thrust bearings, is
weight really a factor? steel seems to be easier to get in the strengths
required, and with a proper coating, is almost care free. one last comment.
i had a thrust bearing weld itself to an alu. mast with alu oxide. i had to
cut the mast on both sides of the bearing and cut the mast out in little
pieces after beating the tar out of it with a large hammer and a punch. it
added a half day to the job. dissimilar metals can do weird things when in
close contact. cu later, henry kb7rta henry@rio.com
