Charlie, W0YG, gave a very good brief tutorial on sniffing noise. Here
is a bit of additional info.

>< Please note AM is the mode to use when trying to locate noise,

SSB is also a good mode for locating noise. I use a Santec 2M Handi-
talkie (made by Bellcore) that has both FM and SSB. Any of the vhf or
uhf multimode rigs can be used for this, and if you have one of the
little
Icom/Yaesu etc. multimode rigs that can run off a battery pack then so
much the better so you can walk around with it.

I use my old 2M transmitter-hunting quad. Sometimes tilting the quad
sideways to change the polarization makes the noise much stronger
and easier to find.
