Yes, you can use rock climbing equipment in some cases, but they really
arent suitable for tower work. There have been many, many changes to
OSHA regs and more too come, and they are there for your protection.
They werent created for no good reason!

Shortly, full body harnesses will be require for all professional tower
workers. IN addition, new regs require that climbers ALWAYS be tied off
to the tower in one way or another. So, if your tower doesnt have a
built in fall arrestor system, you should have 2 lanyards with saftied
grappling hooks to use as you free climb. You should have an approved
fall arrestor system on your harness that you can clip onto the tower
when you reach your work location. Your harness should have D rings on
each side for use with a strap that goes around the tower. That strap
should have the new style snap hooks with safetied gates.

Yes, you as a ham can use almost anything you want for tower work, but
for me, I dont feel as confident as a professional tower climber, and
I'll gladly use all safety equipment available to me, even if it slows
me down a little or means I have to buy a new set of equipment for $250
or so.

About the only thing I like now out of the rock climbing stuff is their
crash helmets in lieu of a big, bulky hardhat...and their carabiners
which you just cant do without!

I'd go on, but I have to go fix dinner! 73, Ty K3MM
