I recently purchased the NEC-WIN Basic modeling software package from
Nittany Scientific.

I chose this because it used NEC-2 codes that are supposed to be more
accurate for antenna elements (wires) close to ground (less than 0.1-0.2
wavelengths). It was also relatively inexpensive, compared to the full-blown
version.
It also has a very nice user interface in Windows. I have done some simple
models of HF dipoles and loops, and am working on my first quad and quagi
models for 146 mhz. I was up *very* late last night tweaking my model and
checking the patterns. Optimization is all manual, but there are tools in
the geometry entry spreadsheet that automate some changes (moving, scaling,
and rotating wire elements). Neat stuff! You can spend days with this. Well,
to sum up, my first impressions are very good. If you're interested in
modeling, this seems to be a great start.
Do any of you have experience with this package and know of any problems or
pitfalls specific to this software? I would be interested in hearing what
others have to say about it.
Also, since the subject of modeling and antenna performance specifications
seems to be heating up as this market develops, it seems that a forum for
sharing modeling files for the various programs would be useful.
