HI John,

I have seen some excellent replies...probably better than I can offer
here....but.....If you can generate a 45 degree up angle from horizontal,
and a suitable sighting device,(protractor, wood triangle, etc,) to
construct this 45 degree up angle, then
take the sighting device and walk back from the tree, far enough that
sighting the 45 intersects the top of the tree, (actually sight the top
location MINUS your height, say minus 5 ft or so..) you have moved away
from tree a distance equal to it's height.  Then simply pace back to the
tree to find it's height...
All assumes flat ground......
