Actually it's more than a yard... it's the principal of following the
manufacturers instructions or not, and it's also a question of the proper
way of pouring tower foundations... using forms and backfilling. I was
commenting on your implication that common sense is a substitute for proper
engineering analysis (for Hams). Even professionals occasionally get in
trouble using "common sense" instead of doing the calculations. Sometimes
the proper approach is counter intuitive. I suspect in this particular case
(toes or no) no harm would be done, but some earlier posts made me cringe...
