Even better is a 440 MHz radio with AM... The IC 706MKIIg would be great for
this!  Even some of the newer hand helds are capable of AM on UHF.

As the noise gets stronger, you can increase the frequency and the signal
gets lower in level.  In other words.... When the frequency increases, the
noise decreases. A 440 or 430 yagi is portable enough to carry around.

The noise locating devices that the power company use are even up to the GHz
range. Makes them very portable and they have a very high gain and very
directional antenna to pinpoint the noise to a single insulator or loose
hardware on the top of the pole!
