OTOH, I had a backhoe in to dig the hole for my tower. something like 4x4x6
but we intentionally planned on making it bigger. the rig was a
small/medium kubota. shovel was a bit over 12" wide, each scoop would fill
a normal wheelbarrow. operator took it slow as I emphasized a clean hole
rather than a quick job. hole turned out very square following the lines we
spraypainted on the grass. he was able to keep the sides very straight as
well and we had to do only a small amount of hand work at the bottom to
square things away. I figured concrete was not an expensive item in the
grand scale of things and besides a bigger foundation provides more
security. I think my concrete was something like 500 bucks delivered to the
site in RI.
