The G5RV when configured and installed properly is actually
a pretty good antenna. The current models for sale that have
a balun and coax to the radio are not really G5RV's. The
original G5RV, developed by Louis Varney, was fed with balanced
line through a tuner. The balanced line kept losses low and the
tuner enabled operation across many ham bands. Note that the
tuner must be able to handle balanced lines properly. The old
Johnson Matchbox series is a good example of this type. The
newer versions of the G5RV with baluns offer a low SWR over
some portions of the ham bands but with increased losses.

The B&W folded dipole is not really a folded dipole either! It's
version of the T2FD (terminated, tilted, folded dipole). This
antenna acheives broad band performance by having a loading
resistor opposite the feedpoint to damp out impedance variations.
At certain frequencies, the resistor will absorb a significant
amount of power. These antennas are used for short range comms
where the losses are tolerable.

So Dino, just what do you want the antenna to do? Are you looking
for short range ragchewing or longer range DX? How much space do
you have? How high can you get the antenna? What bands do you
want to work? Do you have space for more than one antenna? There
are many factors to consider before deciding on an antenna(s).
