Are these digital or analog (motor driven) clocks? All the same (or
similar) model and mfr?
I assume that they are AC line connected (not battery powered?)
Are these conventional "magnetic" ballasted lamps, or new Compact
Fluorescents, with integral electronic ballasts?
The electronic ballasted fluorescent lamps are probably drawing current that
is highly non-sinusoidal, and putting a fair amount of 2nd harmonic on the
line, which is confusing the zero crossing detector in the clock. What's
the rated Power Factor on the lamps? If it's high enough, then the harmonic
content should be low. Likewise if the the lamps have a CE mark. However,
be aware that not all manufacturers are scrupulous in correctly marking
(particularly for very cheap lamps from non-deep pockets mfrs, they may just
mark it without having actually determined whether it's in compliance.)
Oh yes... does the behavior change with temperature (of the lamps) or how
long they've been on? You've probably noticed that CF lamps get steadily
brighter over 10 minutes or so. The current drawn changes during that time,
and for inexpensive ballasts the waveform probably also changes (it's
basically a PWM inverter to limit the current).
( by the way, I'd love to know the make and models involved to try this
experiment.. and hook it up to a scope to look.)

Subject: [TowerTalk] use of flourescents
Hi,
We have what seems to us an unusual problem. I just recently installed
flourescent bulbs in all of our table lamps, recessed lighting etc. When we
turn on the flourescent flood lights in our bathroom, (recessed), lighting,
the clocks in our bedroom run faster. They flip to a new minute every 30
seconds. If they are then turned off, the clocks go back to normal. We
have tested this time after time. At first we thought we just had a problem
with the clocks in our bedroom. Then we took one of the clocks from another
bedroom, which was keeping perfect time and put it in our bedroom.
Immediately it started running faster. The clock that we took out of our
bedroom and placed in the other room, continues to run faster when the
bathroom lights are on. Go figure. This is the room where the clock was
keeping perfect time. The clock/radio in the bathroom keeps perfect time,
with lights on or off. HELP !!!!!!!!!!
Our microwave clock and stove clock seem to be fine. We love all the light
we get from the flourescents and that they are using less energy, but the
clocks are there for a reason.
If you have any insight into this, please feel free to let me know.
Thank you in advance,
Bill Harney
