Now that I'm retired I have the time and a little more room to homebrew antennas and other gear. 45 Years ago, I homebrewed a lot as a teenager because I couldn't afford to do otherwise, and I still remember the bitter disappointment when some project I'd sweated over for days just wouldn't work as the handbook or QST article said it should. I suspect most of us have been there at one time or another.

Now that I have a little bigger budget for ham gear, I think first establishing a basic station with good commercial gear has given me the "foundation" on which to do the experimenting and practical "hands-on" learning ...without the downside. I should have done this years ago, but I'm glad to be able to do it now.

Plus...when I was a teen ager 45 years ago I had no elmer... just books and magazines. Now there's resources like TowerTalk.... a real blessing for an old dog learning new tricks....many thanks, guys!

If I homebrewed everything, I'd have 20% of the station I do now. I'd love to homebrew much more, but often its a practical question of time!At 08:34 AM 11/18/2004, Yo3ctk wrote:
Jim,

With all due respect, some people <have to> spend money on industrial products because they <don't have> enough time for homebrew, but at the same time they want to improve their stations.

I assume all your equipment is homebrew, including transceivers, and that you have learned <lots> of technical stuff in the process. Good for you. Alas, some of us are just "ignorant" appliance operators.

People who likes to spend money buys Comtek boxes.
People who doesn´t makes a W7EL phaseing unit by
themself, not only will they save money but at the
same time they will get a better working 4 square
vertical array.
Also they might learn something technical in the
process.
