Guys, here's the deal:

I CLEARLY stated that OSHA's regulations do not specifically apply in this
situation. However, just because OSHA does not apply in this situation, it
DOESN'T RELEASE YOU FROM CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LIABILITY STATUTES which, for
the most part, are surprisingly similar.

Three quick points:

1. Adding a non-certified element to an installation can/may/will derate
the ENTIRE INSTALLATION depending on the company. Yes, that tower setup
might be completely safe, but unless you have a professional engineer
willing to certify it, you're seriously gambling with your future.

2. Unless you are using a brand like Yates for fall arrest, you're using
the equipment improperly. Just because it's rated for climbing, that does
not mean it's automatically approved or rated for fall arrest. Once again,
this is a LEGAL difference.

3. THE MOST COMMON EXPLANATION heard by the people who taught these classes
and investigate (and testify about) rigging accidents is "We've done it
that way a hundred times before..." Repeating a bad idea is always a bad
idea, no matter how many times it worked before. Using waist type climbing
belts for fall arrest KILLS PEOPLE. You can't argue with that. The truth
isn't different just because you've never heard of it.

I do not have time to respond to everything right now, but judging from the
private email I've received, I urge you to just read the damned post, don't
read anything else into it, and ignore it if you wish.

You can read it here or find out about it in court. Your choice, but if I
get one person to think, "Hey, maybe spending an extra $100 here will save
me a million or so later on.", then good. That was my point .

Do it right or don't do it at all.
