About a decade ago, there was a DXpedition to one of the antarctic 
countries where they were on a glacier several hundred feet deep. 
Since ice frozen hard is a non-conductor, they simply laid their 
dipoles down on the ice and they worked as if they were several 
hundred feet in the air.

Wish I could remember which one it was, but I do remember the above.
