For vertical cables...I put  a 3X5" sponge against the cable...the 
bottom of the sponge has home made  tinfoil box basin....place the 
sponge against the cable and spray into it as the cable is 
moving......the sponge captures the overspray and the tin cup 
collects the lube..then I use to sponge to apply till the sponge is 
dry...just hold the sponge against the cable and squeeze 
lightly.....then repeat till you feel you got it coated....
