Another trick I have used for years (acutally saw it in CQ magazine in an 
article by KH6IJ) was to take a screwdriver and clamp it on the end of the 
element, handle towards the boom, with a pair of vice grips.  The whack it 
with a hammer to drive it out.  Works for me.  Heating first would help a 
whole lot, though.  73
