Actually, the Yaesu stuff, particularly the rotators themselves, is 
pretty good quality - mine have been running for 10-13 years without a 
failure.

Your symptoms all sound to me like control cable problems.  I have a 
Jones plug on one of my rotators, and when the contacts are dirty, I get 
the same sort of bizarre symptoms.  Check for water ingress at the 
connector on the rotator end, and for bad connections where your cable 
goes into the AMP connector on the back of the control box.
