Same as N6RK, I laid my HDX589 over and extended it just enough to get in the 2800. BUT, it is a very very tight fit with minimal clearance, so check very carefully for interference on the next lower section before collapsing the tower!!

Do
I just lay the tower over and pull out the top section to get
access to the rotor plate? Is there anything I need to watch out for to
avoid kinking the raising cables?

NO!. The cables, including the pull down, are all under tension.
To pull out just the top section you have to de-tension the pull
down cable with a come along. Then later, you have to re-tension
it.

On my HDX-5106, I didn't want to do this so I laid it down and
let the bottom section rest on some big timbers. Then I extended
it horizontally until it was about 50 feet "high". This exposed
the rotator area so I could work on it. Of course I did this
with the antenna (MonstIR) removed. UST says what I did is
the recommended procedure.

AFAIK, the Orion 2800 is the biggest rotator that will fit in
the top section of an HDX-5 series. Except for a "small" prop
pitch, which is what I have (thanks K7NV).
