The advantage to the tools mentioned is that if done right it will guide
the drill into a perpendicular position. A vee block and a drill press
can do the same thing. A vee block and just a drill may not "guarantee"
that the hole you drill is perpendicular - at least for most of us
mortals. I have known a couple of guys that could hold a piece of tubing
in one hand and a drill in the other and get a perpendicular hole - but
most of us can't do that consistently.

Generally when trying to get that hole perpendicular, it needs to be in the same plane/parallel with a numberof other holes. It gets really interesting if you also need to thread it. Orrrr...when on the leg of a tower and needs to be perpendicular to the main axts of the tower.

A notched vee shaped block and drill works too. Right?

I agree with you Gary. The Big Gator drill guide is a simpler, smarter

I'm the original poster.

I actually have one of these, exactly like the DX Engineering one,
that I
purchased at a woodworking store. While it works OK, there are a
number of
disadvantages:

It has a bunch of small pieces that are easy to lose, especially if
you're
working outside. The way the drill inserts fit into the plastic holder
leaves a lot to be desired.

It's also hard or impossible to clamp it in place. The Big-Gator one I
posted about doesn't have that problem.

Such is the way with tools....

Hello Larry,

The drill guides from DX Engineering are inexpensive and work very
well. I used them to build several antennas last summer.

DX Engineering sells a drill guide for drilling perpendicular holes. I
have seen the same guide elsewhere although I don't remember where
(maybe Rockler

another woodworking seller?). I have not personally used it.

I'm also a woodworker and saw an ad for a drilling guide that looks
like it might be just the thing for drilling perpendicular holes in
aluminum and steel tubing like we like to use for ham radio projects.

I'll have to pick one of these up.

Note that I used a link for Woodcraft because they had the best
description and photos. These are available from multiple sources.
Just Google "Big Gator Tools".
