Hi John - what you're describing sounds a lot like a clamp-type PL-259.
both these and crimp PL-259s are widely available on ebay, from the RF
Connection (www.therfc.com) and all the usual suspects.

Greenpar Engineering also manufactured a very easy to install PL259 plug
which included a knurled tube as part of the plug body, the knurled tube

origin of the "O" ring clamping method for coaxial outer braid using the
modified PL259 plug design, was hose clamps used for miniature flexible
tubing, and the manufacturer of the "O" rings, and clamping pincers, was
Oetiker, and that company does still trade.
