I have seen SWER in Canada in the 1980s. I believe it was in Alberta. Just one primary conductor on the pole along the road and to the pole by the house.

You can kind of get away with pouring a bit of household 60hz into the
ground, but don't count on it to work for a primary on a power line either!

The most amazing thing next to the fact that it works at all is the fact that it actually works acceptably well for the intended application!
