I spent several years in my youth installing pay telephones for Southern
Bell in the Atlanta area. I installed many (perhaps more than 100) 8'
ground rods with a 1/2" rotary hammer and a cup device made for that
purpose. Setting it up and pounding it rarely took more than an hour. There
were only a few places where we weren't successful, when we were over solid
granite. Then we usually found another way to bond.

I use a more modern 1/2" rotary drill/hammer today. But the rock is softer
here in Florida, most drives only take a few minutes.
