Hi, Jim.

I would agree with that, but I was only referring to feedpoint effects, not pattern. It stands to reason that a vertical dipole would have a lower takeoff angle than a ground plane because of the greater physical separation of current.

Not quite, Dave. A vertical half-wave dipole puts more of its power into low angles than does a quarter wave antenna. I've done a couple of modeling studies to show this, to study the effect of mounting height, and to compare verticals and horizontal antennas at various mounting heights.
