What is this fixation wit accuracy and pointing antennas?

The road by our house runs N/S and is close enough.

On HF +/- 10 degrees should be "close enough. Even with large arrays "That looks about right" with most of us is more than close enough.

The only time you need accuracy to a "few" degrees or better is with VHF, UHF and up, arrays. Dish antennas do need precision as does Astrophotography. Now that's into the less than 1 degree. Aeronautical charts with the Isogonic lines tell you how far a magnetic compass is off in your area. That gets you into the ballpark.

Using a 10" Schmidt Cassagrain The N star isn't even in the field of view at true north with a low power eyepiece. Here a magnetic compass is only a few degrees off. Within a 150 miles it may be off 30 degrees or more.
