Although I have used conduit, I've also gone with direct bury.

The conduit is for protection. Low spots? Who cares? Water in the conduits has never caused a problem. OTOH I have no connectors or splices in the conduit. If you are in an area that freezes (I am) then put the conduit below the frost line. Drain holes in this area above the frost line would quickly freeze over from frozen condensation.

Around here, I'd dare not leave cables laying on the ground. They need protection from critters, people, and equipment. At one time I had the coax from two long UHF Yagi TV antennas enter the NEMA box about 2' above the ground. When the snow became deep enough for rodents to reach the coax they chewed one off and about half way through the other with the braid exposed all the way around.

Hello fellow Towertalkers,

Hopefully spring is around the corner and I can pick up work again on my tower
project. I plan to make two 150 ft runs of LDF5-50A from the house SPG to the
base of the tower. Trying to decide if I should run the hardline in conduit or
just direct-bury. Soil around here is clay mixed with some sand. Rare to find a
rock, and if I do it's small stream gravel with smooth edges.. Part of the run
is through a wooded area.

A conduit run would have some low spots (potential for moisture accumulation
??). But I worry about critters (moles/voles/etc) chewing on the jacket if I
direct-bury.

Anyone have a bad experience from direct bury of Andrew hardline? Rodent
damage? Crushing damage due to lawn tractors, etc? Something else?

thx
