I used variables often with K6STI's AO because the program optimized. 
EZNEC does not.  It is pretty easy to pick groups of wires and manually
move them in EZNEC.

I can't imagine building a model, other than a very simple one, without using
variables.
In 4NEC2 I can change one variable (like height) and every element of a
multielement yagi goes to that height.
