1st, ME TOO! My new Tashjian (used to be Tri-Ex) DX70 arrived
yesterday. Yahoo!
I can find no instructions for anything regarding this tower. I
understand the acute sensitivity to the common litigious behavior that
has become the norm but gee whiz, I would like some guidance as it could
save me some suffering from an unseen problem or avert some dumb thing I
might do for not knowing any better. So I am appealing for any comments
from anyone familiar with this free standing crank-up/tilt-over tower.
OK back to Joel's situation: I removed a worn out rusty hand winch from
a two section tower that I was customizing and replaced it with a Harbor
Freight 120 volt hoist and am pleased with the results. My objection to
the little winches intended for off road automotive service is that they
are all 12 volt and serious current at 12 volts as can be supplied
briefly by a good battery but would take a humongous power supply which
to conform to good practice would require the low volt PS to be near the
load because long cables would have to be huge to avoid serious voltage
drop. You can't have the PS next to all three guy anchor locations. So
3 power supplies, or three batteries would be needed and you would have
to run AC to each PS.
Much simpler would be to use 120VAC hoists or winches. Not enough line
pull? Use a snatch block and double it or a multi-part block and tackle
for serious multiplication.
A rig like this will give you multiple opportunities to "mess up" but
with care should do what you want nicely. Best of luck to you. Please

What I'm curious about is what about using ATV winches for the guy wires? I
have a couple reasons for wanting this. I want to do some experiments with
antenna height and I still need to guy the tower off but want to be able to guy
it off fairly quickly. With the winches, I could run all the power leads to
one spot and be able to put a level on the tower as I tighten the winches one
by one being careful not to torque the whole thing down.
If anyone has any tips I'm all ears and any info on this tower like wind
loading would be most appreciated.
