This topic HAS been covered here many times over the years.
At low tensions, there is a big difference in deflection between
aircraft cable, 19 strand, and 7 strand because stiffness dominates. As
you approach normal pre-tension values of 10% breaking strength, most of
the deflection in the gauge is developed by the tension in the wire, not
the stiffness.

I have often thought of doing just what you have done, which is a 'must'
if you want to use a Loos gauge with confidence. My problem is that I
didn't have any sort of strain gauge to throw into the mix.
