I think rope is just a patch for a poorly designed element.

Some years ago, Dick Weber, K5IU did some work on this issue and I believe
that
he wrote an article that was published in CQ (or maybe QST).
I haven't found it online but I didn't do a lot of digging.
Dave Leeson, W6NL, talked about element vibration damping techniques in his
book "Physical Design of Yagi Antennas", page 4-39.
