I am not sure what the technically correct answer is but in Chicago I had
hundreds of feet of feedline buried 18" deep (about 1/2 the frost line
depth) and never had an issue.

After all this time I'm contemplating my first direct buried run of coax.
Hence this qwuestion - how deep is deep enough?  DoI need to get below the
frost line?
