Don't be intimidated by "pages of formulas".  It's a pretty basic concept.
If the diagram show a 4 x 4 x 4 cube and you have a 4 -5.5 ft cube.  Your
cube ends in undisturbed soil (from the backhoe) and their cube is a perfect
form with backfilled and compacted soil against the cured block.  Rebar
cross sections the same (doesn't matter if yours have extra stubs that don't
show on the drawing because they are cut off by the perfect form).  The
hairy but strong base is absolutely as strong (probably more so as described
above) than the perfect cube to print. 

 

You don't need pages of formulas to come up with that conclusion.
