1. The ordinary number keys are in the same position on every keyboard;
keypads are usually stuck over to the right somewhere, past some
indeterminate number of cursor keys, etc.

2. I can reach the ordinary number keys without lifting my hands from the
home position; to get to the number pad I have to move my hands.

3. Many contests don't use serial numbers; I (speaking just for myself)
find it much easier to have the number pad programmed with a set pattern of
messages for every contest than to use the pad only for a few contests.

4. It's much easier to hit the big fat 0 on the number pad when I want to
send my call than it is to mess around trying to find the right function
key somewhere at the top of the keyboad.

But everyone has their own way of doing these things. It's nice that TR
lets most of us do most things "our" way most of the time. It only gets
irritating when it DOESN'T let me work the way I want to.
