I am afraid that I am 99% sure that you are correct. There is typically no 
way to change this. At least, I have never seen such a way. It is actually 
more a case of the fact that you can't get an alternative DOS-mode display 
driver than anything fundamentally strange about the hardware. You should 
be able to run text-mode Linux OK on such machines and get a decent 
display, for example (since that will use a different driver).
